41 years later, I stayed inside the lodge instead of outside down
the road.

Work is over and
traveling home in late August 1958. This is somewhere in western Montana and heading
in direction of Salt Lake City.
Still in Montana.
I've since learned what those perfectly level terrace lines are on the mountain: water erosion from the giant lake formed in west central Montana 10,000 years ago during the ice age. Periodically the ice dam broke and the giant lake rushed down the Columbia River gorge.
This was my last summer
to work in Montana. Supposedly I'm wiping the tears off my
glasses.
